HP dials back profit expectations on PC market slump, China weakness

By Zaheer Kachwala

(Reuters) -HP Inc tempered expectations for annual profit on Tuesday, as it grapples with a more than a year-long slump in the personal computers segment and sluggish demand in key market China.

Shares of the Palo Alto, California-based company fell 5.2% in after-market trading.

Inflation and an uncertain global economy triggered a decline in demand for consumer electronics including PCs last year, and led to increased inventory across the supply chain.

“While we expect another quarter of sequential growth in the fourth quarter, the external environment has not improved as quickly as anticipated and we are moderating our expectations as a result,” said HP’s CEO Enrique Lores.

PC shipments including desktops, notebooks and workstations to China have dropped 19% in the past few months as the region remains cautious about spending on IT, according to analysis firm Canalys.

“We don’t see it (a recovery in China) happening anytime soon. And at this point, we are not building that recovery in any of our plans,” Lores added.

HP now forecasts adjusted earnings per share to be in the range of $3.23 to $3.35 from earlier expectations of $3.30 to $3.50.

The company‘s third-quarter revenue dropped 9.9% to $13.20 billion compared with analysts’ estimates of $13.37 billion, according to Refinitiv data.

However, a focus on controlling costs helped the PC maker report adjusted earnings per share of 86 cents, in line with analysts’ estimates.

Total costs and expenses also fell 8.6% from a year earlier.

The company remains on track to deliver 40% of its three-year cost savings target by the end of the fiscal year.

Don’t Let A Future Investor Ask Why Your Agency Hasn’t Got An AI Strategy

Agency owners looking to sell up must have a response to the questions posed by AI, writes Martin Ward of Waypoint Partners.

Selling your agency is all about putting your best foot forward. Until recently, it was clear what a potential investor or buyer was looking for. But with the recent huge advances in AI, the goalposts have changed. According to a private equity house that is active in the marketing services space, if you don’t have an AI strategy as part of your IM (the information memorandum, a core sales document), you’re unlikely to impress.

In effect, you will be broadcasting to the world that you are either behind the times or simply arrogant enough to believe you can ignore the impact of the technology. Both are as bad as each other. An agency that gets it will know that, depending on how they navigate the technology, it represents either the biggest existential threat or the greatest opportunity.

But if the requirement to get on board with the opportunity presented by AI is clear to most, the decision-making journey the leadership team needs to go on is by no means straightforward. And that’s because the business world likes to deal with certainties: if I do A plus B, the result will be C.

We can also blame Richard Herrnstein’s hyperbolic discounting theory, which, simply put, means we humans are much more likely to opt for today’s clear but smaller reward over a future, larger reward that is not yet quite tangible. Effecting behavior change to mitigate climate change is tough for the same reason.

When it comes to embedding generative AI in your organization, whether to make efficiencies or to develop new products and services, you can’t be sure of the endgame until you’re well on the way and

‘Devastating news.’ NC furniture maker abruptly shuts down, with over 530 out of work

Hundreds of furniture company workers just lost their jobs after a furniture company about an hour north of Charlotte closed abruptly over the weekend.

Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams workers were met with signs Saturday on the office door and a gate saying the Taylorsville plant was “unexpectedly” unable to continue business operations. Taylorsville in Alexander County is about one hour north of Charlotte.

The layoffs affect 533 employees at three sites, according to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) filed Monday with the North Carolina Department of Commerce. There are 440 workers at One Comfortable Place, Taylorsville; 47 workers at 125 Lulu Lane, Statesville; and 46 employees at 375 Sharpe Lane, Hiddenite, in Alexander County, according to the report emailed to The Charlotte Observer.

“This has been an extremely difficult decision, as it means the loss of many dedicated and valued employees. Thus, any assistance that you can provide in helping us to place our employees in new work would be greatly appreciated,” MG+BW CEO Chris Moye said in the WARN letter to the state.

The announcement was just the latest in a line of closures to befall North Carolina’s once-robust furniture-making industry.

Earlier this month, Asheboro-based Klaussner Furniture Industries Inc. said it was ceasing operations with nearly 900 job losses, WARN notices filed with the North Carolina Department of Commerce show. And last year, Ashley Furniture Furniture Industries permanently closed its Statesville facility, resulting in 111 layoffs, when the Wisconsin-based company consolidated operations, The Charlotte Observer previously reported.

Employees at several North Carolina sites for MG+BW were told not to report to work Monday, including at the main plant in Taylorsville as well as in Statesville, Hiddenite and teleworkers.

“We are sorry about the difficulties this may cause,” the sign said. “As soon as we have
