Cambria brownfield site eyed for strawberry greenhouse | News

Something sweeter is planned for the future of a former Cambria junkyard.

NF Lockport LLC, a subsidiary of Northern Farms in partnership with Netafim and Orbia, plans to build a greenhouse and warehouse at 5222 Junction Road, Cambria, remediating the brownfield site in the process.

Northern Farms spokesperson Evan Coleman and attorney Chris Canada of Hodgson Russ, speaking via phone at this week’s Niagara County Industrial Development Agency board meeting, stated that the crops grown there will be mainly for the New England market. Northern Farms said it has no intention of growing cannabis in the greenhouse due to company policy of not investing in it.

The 30-acre site, across the railroad tracks from Cambria Asphalt, would house a 25-acre greenhouse and a 100,000-square foot warehouse. Strawberries will be the main crop; other fruits and vegetables could be grown there as well.

Coleman explained that strawberries in New England supermarkets prior to COVID-19 were brought in from California, Florida and Mexico. There were already logistical challenges in moving the crop that distance due to its brief shelf life.

“We looked at starting to do this about five years ago,” Coleman said, adding that he knew a group of people from Fidelity Investments who built backyard farms that became 42 acres of greenhouses in Maine. “It was a successful project employing over 250 people and contributes quite a bit to the local tax base.”

That led Northern Farms to get involved with Netafim, an Israel irrigation equipment manufacturer looking to be a larger player in greenhouse spaces.

The soil at the former scrapyard is contaminated with heavy metals, lead and oil. It has been vacant for more than 20 years and the former owners owe Niagara County more than $600,000 in taxes. The country transferred the tax lien to the Niagara

$1.8M Carolina Pregnancy Center construction to begin in Spartanburg

Alexia Newman, Carolina Pregnancy Center executive director, said the damage caused by the fire inside the building was “minimal.” Newman said fire damage estimates are between $1,200 and $2,000.

“We don’t know a lot about what happened last night,” Newman told The Post and Courier. “There will have to be repairs that won’t cost a lot of money, but there will be an expense. The fire was on the floor level. They were trying to torch the place.”

Newman said since the fire occurred there’s been an outpouring of concern from the community.

“We are grateful for the support,” Newman said. “The Sheriff’s Office is doing their best to track down to see who did this.”

While on the campaign trail in Charleston, Republican presidential candidate Tim Scott expressed concern about what happened to the Carolina Pregnancy Center. During the town hall event, where he outlined his plan to empower parents, Scott said that his vision for a parent’s bill of rights would start with adoption, not at K-12.

“It starts with making sure that we protect crisis pregnancy centers,” Scott said, later adding, “We

Agency aims to distribute 2,000 tonnes of local white rice monthly

THE Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) has aimed to distribute 2,000 tonnes of local white rice nationwide every month.

Its chairman Aminuddin Zulkipli said the distribution would be carried out at 35 Fama operational centres, in addition to 416 Fama-guided entrepreneur outlets and through the Agro Madani Sales programme in 102 locations, as well as 726 selected sundry shops.

“To date … 132,160 10kg bags of local white rice worth RM3.37 million have been distributed nationwide.

“We managed to distribute almost 90% of local white rice across the country and it is subject to the available stock, and so far we do not have issues with the suppliers,” he said after officiating the “Go Cashless” programme at Mat Frozen Agrobazaar Rakyat in Kampung Padang Tembak in Teluk Intan, Perak, today.

Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu said during a briefing in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday that Fama and the Farmers’ Organisation Authority (FAO) were directed to step up their distribution of local white rice.

He said since the retail sales margin for the item is only 50 sen per 10kg, the government would cover transport costs for Fama and FAO for distribution. – Bernama, October 13, 2023.
