Mackinac Island’s Arch Rock viewing area to close for construction of $7.5M nature center

MACKINAC ISLAND, MI – The viewing platform for Mackinac Island’s most famous rock formation will soon close.

The upper viewing area of Arch Rock, known as the Arch Rock Plaza, will close on Monday, Sept. 11, as construction crews begin a $7.5 million project to construct the Milliken Nature Center in the area.

The area will remain closed to all traffic, including carriages, bicycles, and pedestrians, through at least April of 2024, according to Mackinac State Historic Parks.

Guests will be able to view Arch Rock from M-185, the shoreline road that circles Mackinac Island, and walk the stairway known as Spring Trail to the Arch Rock viewing platform.

“The Milliken Nature Center will be a welcome and fitting addition to the Arch Rock area,” said Mackinac State Historic Parks Director Steve Brisson. “In order for this structure to be ready for guests during the 2024 season construction must start soon. While we empathize with guests who may not be able to fully visit Arch Rock this fall, we are confident future guests will appreciate and enjoy the new Milliken Nature Center.”

Arch Rock, a unique natural limestone arch, stands on Lake Huron’s shoreline 146 feet above the Great Lake and can be seen from the island’s perimeter. It has been visited by millions of people since humans first came to the island.

The Arch Rock Plaza will be closed at the intersection of Rifle Range Road and Leslie Avenue and again at the intersection of Arch Rock Road and Huron Road. The Arch Rock Bicycle Trail and Botanical Trail will dead end before the hill leading to Arch Rock.

During this time Mackinac Island Carriage Tours, private livery tours, drive-yourself carriages, and saddle horses will have alternate routes that avoid Arch Rock.

Roads will be closed at Leslie Avenue

Brand-new Del Sol High in Oxnard building athletic programs from the ground up

Jose Perez scores the first touchdown in Del Sol High School's history during a freshman game against Buena on Aug. 17.

Jose Perez scores the first touchdown in Del Sol High School’s history during a freshman game against Buena on Aug. 17.

The Oxnard Union High School District had five head football coach openings in the offseason.

But one job was not like the others, according to James Nelson.

The former Buena High, Ventura College and Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman, who had served as Hueneme High’s run-game coordinator during the Vikings’ run to the section semifinals last fall, saw the position at brand-new Del Sol High as a once-in-a-career opportunity.

“We’re building from the ground up,” Nelson said. “Literally.”

When Nelson was hired in March, there were no jerseys, no pads, no players and no field. Only a construction site on the corner of Camino Del Sol and Rose Avenue in East Oxnard, where a school was rising from former farmland.

“You get to put your handprint on everything,” Nelson said. “Everything will be 100% you.”

It was that opportunity that allowed athletic director Chris Holdsworth to draw some big names as the Jaguars put together their staff of coaches earlier this year.

“I think the big draw was to build something from scratch,” Holdsworth said. “Every coach has that idea, ‘If I was to do things over again, this is what I would do.’

“To come here as a clean slate with freshmen, and they were all hired as varsity head coaches — so they will have this group of kids for years before they eventually get to varsity — that, to me, was the main draw.”

Boys basketball coach Keith Epps just guided Santa Paula to its first section final. Girls flag football coach Lui Toilolo is the former head football coach

UNC-Chapel Hill student left building after fatally shooting adivser, police say

UNC Police released a picture of a person of interest in Monday’s “armed and dangerous” situation. Police ask anyone who see the person to keep their distance put their safety first, and call 911 (UNC Police)

A University of North Carolina graduate student charged with killing his faculty adviser walked into a classroom building, shot the victim and then left, authorities said Tuesday, shedding light on an attack that led to a campuswide lockdown as police searched for the gunman.

Tailei Qi, 34, was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder and having a gun on educational property in Monday’s killing of Zijie Yan inside of a science building at the state’s flagship public university.

Chapel Hill city police arrested Qi in a residential neighborhood near the campus within two hours of the attack and didn’t need to use force to take him into custody, UNC Police Chief Brian Jones said at a news conference. He said investigators were still trying to determine a motive and were still searching for the gun used to kill Yan.

UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz said his team has met with Yan’s colleagues and family to express condolences and offer support.

“He was a beloved colleague, mentor and a friend of so many on our campus and a father to two young children,” Guskiewicz said at the news conference.

On Wednesday, the school’s iconic Bell Tower will ring in honor of Yan’s memory and students are encouraged to take a moment of silence, he said. The school also canceled classes until Thursday.

New Building for FAULHABER Group Allows Diverse Production Possibilities

With the extension of its production location in Jimbolia, Romania, the FAULHABER Group is taking a significant step to boost its competitiveness on the market and at the same time to satisfy the growing demand for its high-quality products.

FAULHABER Motors Romania S.R.L with around 170 employees and a production area of 2,850 square meters has been active in Jimbolia in Timis County, Romania, since 2005. The production site is a key element of the manufacturing network of the FAULHABER Group. Important skilled manual activities such as gearhead assembly or balancing processes are performed there. Windings for FAULHABER bell-type armature motors are manufactured at the site too. Furthermore, the range of services also includes the manufacture of modules as well as the assembly of customer-specific complete drive systems.

To safeguard the competitiveness of the FAULHABER Group in the long term, the company is extending this site. The relocation of new projects is one of the principal reasons for this measure. The extension will cover an area of 5,000 square meters, whereby 3,800 square meters are intended for production. The remaining area will be used for warehousing and administration.

According to the structural plans, the new production hall is based on a metal construction fitted out in compliance with FAULHABER standards. This extension will considerably increase production capacity at the location in order to meet growing demands. In addition to the increase in surface area, there will also be a significant increase in the number of employees at the location. This measure will create new jobs and boost the local economy in the Jimbolia region.

Diverse Production Possibilities

The new building will provide a wide range of production possibilities. Apart from modules for motors, the location will also produce motors and finished goods that are used in

Site-responsive arts biennale enters exciting growth phase

The small port city of Fremantle in WA is widely known as Perth’s closest neighbour as well as its distant cousin. Its yesteryear wharfie vibe and crumbling colonial buildings are a thousand miles away from the rest of the world, yet its pockets of hipster cafés, contemporary art spaces and organic markets bear strong marks of the present moment.

For Artistic Director of the site-responsive contemporary arts festival Fremantle Biennale, Tom Mùller, the Walyalup/Fremantle region has informed the Biennale’s vision since 2017, when it set out to bring some of the most thrilling international contemporary art experiences to a place so steeped in history.
