Web Developer – Career Rankings, Salary, Reviews and Advice

Web developers create and maintain websites and web applications, and they use web-facing technology to build software.

They talk with clients to understand their needs and build websites that meet them. Other duties may include:

  • working with graphic designers on site layout or doing design work themselves
  • creating mockups
  • testing and problem-solving
  • meeting with various stakeholders.

“A lot of the job is explaining technical concepts in nontechnical ways,” says Michael Panik, Birmingham, Alabama-based technical lead for Alloy, a software firm and digital strategy company. “You have to be able to talk about what you do, and you have to be able to convince people that it’s worth doing. But the rest of the time is a lot of being in the code.”

Web developers must possess good research skills as they try to understand clients’ needs and create desired products. They must have good project management and logical reasoning skills and should communicate effectively with clients and teammates.

The scope of a web developer’s job can depend on their specialty and what they’re most experienced in. Back-end developers are responsible for writing the code that stores and processes data on a site. Front-end developers focus more on the user interface and need an eye for design. Full-stack developers have some proficiency in both front- and back-end web development.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 30.3% employment growth for web developers between 2021 and 2031. In that period, an estimated 28,900 jobs should open up.

Whether you are embarking on a new business adventure or are a seasoned business owner, one factor is likely to be a constant – the need for a website. Be it on desktop, mobile or app, today’s websites are a crucial interface for businesses and their customers.

The best websites are essential business tools, used to establish credibility and build trust with customers. They provide all the information essentials, showcase products and services, answer common questions, and even facilitate end-to-end transactions.

As the world evolves to address our new way of living, websites are playing a bigger role than ever. Failing to nail your online presence could see potential customers trickle right through your fingers. While some simple websites can indeed be built yourself, placing the digital fate of your business is best left to the professionals.

So where does one turn for this type of assistance? The answer is simple – to Canberra’s best web developers. Web developers are masters of programming, whipping up stellar digital platforms that grace the world wide web. They manipulate code to design aesthetically pleasing online destinations that are intuitive to use at the same time. They can also take care of ongoing maintenance, web hosting, content and image sourcing, and search engine optimisation.

With that in mind, a web developer can be one of your most critical service hires. In effect, they create the online face of your business, so it is important to get it right the first time. Failing to select the right web developer can be a business risk, both in terms of time and money – but also in potential customer attrition. Web Developer Reviews and Advice

Many web developers work full time, although work hours can vary greatly. Those who work for a startup may work longer hours or less traditional hours than those who work for an established company. But the work schedule can also vary by individual project, project volume and clients’ schedules.

“My typical (schedule) is a 9-to-5, excepting circumstances like trying to launch a new project when you can’t do it during peak hours of the day because there are people visiting the website you’re about to replace,” Panik says. “So if it’s an existing site, and you’re building a new one to replace it, you’ve got to do it in the middle of the night, when traffic is historically low.”

In 2020, 18% of web developers and digital designers in the U.S. were self-employed, according to the BLS. Fifteen percent worked for computer systems design and related services, while 9% worked for publishing industries (other than the internet); 5% worked in management, scientific, and technical consulting services; and 4% in advertising, public relations and related services.

Advancement opportunities depend on an organization’s structure and the career path a developer wants to take. Web developers can work their way up from entry-level positions to roles like technical lead, director or senior engineer. Those who advance usually exhibit effective communication skills in addition to technical skills and a commitment to lifelong learning in an ever-changing environment.

“That’s what gets you put in front of clients. It’s what gets you put in front of nontechnical folks,” Panik says. “If you couple good technical skill with good knowledge of what’s out there and also be personable and able to communicate your ideas, I think you have huge potential for advancement.”

Web development tools, frameworks evolve quickly

Changes in technology have led to changes in how web applications are created. And that has caused some consternation among web developers.

A decade ago, the development choice was to use .NET or Java, which meant WPF or ASP.NET for Microsoft developers. Java has been a bread-and-butter language for a long time, so that’s a safe bet. And Microsoft was known for 10-plus years of support for technologies, and even when they changed, the company always made sure everything was backward-compatible. So that was also seen as a safe bet.

Today, according to Jason Beres of Infragistics, “Now we go to this new modern web, there’s a dozen frameworks I could choose from – in fact, there could be a dozen frameworks coming out every day.” With more language options, platforms and libraries to choose from, developers often find themselves asking, ‘Which is the right one for my project? How can I keep track of what all of these have to offer?’ People want the right answer, but as in most things in development tools and languages, there is no one right answer.

Beres said that in a recent talk by Gartner analyst Mark Driver that he attended, “He basically said the issue with the enterprise today is because there are so many choices, and the web is moving so fast, that anything you decide to use today you’re going to throw out in five years, you’re going to throw out in three years.”

If you know that going into it, Beres said, it frees up all this stress and anxiety over choosing a platform – you can only future-proof based on what you know today, based on available frameworks and their respective features. “The hard part,” he said, “is overcoming the fact that, ‘If you wrote a

Web Developers at Work

Credits: Creativity>Brett L Long Plot>Chat GPT4 Art>BlueWillow AI

In the bustling heart of Techville, a small town known for its innovative community, a group of web developers gathered around a wooden table in a cozy, dimly lit room. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air as they opened their laptops, ready to brainstorm the next big project.

They were the Rising Code, a team of passionate web developers eager to bring a unique touch to the local small businesses around them. Their latest client was “Molly’s Bakery,” a family-run bakery renowned for its mouth-watering pastries and warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Molly herself sat at the head of the table, her eyes twinkling with excitement as she explained her vision. She wanted a website as warm and inviting as her bakery, something that could capture the essence of her handcrafted treats.

Tom, the lead designer, began to sketch a layout on his tablet, incorporating soft pastel colors and a touch of vintage flair. He wanted to bring Molly’s stories and recipes to life online.

Sophie, a talented UX designer, suggested a user-friendly navigation menu that would lead customers on a sensory journey through the bakery’s offerings. She wanted people to feel the crunch of croissants and taste the tang of fresh berries as they explored the site.

Meanwhile, Jack, the seasoned developer, was focused on functionality. He wanted to implement a smooth online ordering system that would make purchasing Molly’s creations a breeze. Integrating customer reviews, blogs about baking, and the story of Molly’s family traditions was also key to creating a community feel.

As ideas flew across the table, Molly’s eyes widened with joy. The team’s creativity was beyond anything she had imagined, and she could see her humble bakery being transformed into a digital masterpiece.
